Studio for the Early American Musical is dedicated to presenting songs from early Broadway, vaudeville and musical film by songwriters such as Jerome Kern, Irving Berlin, George Gershwin, Cole Porter, and Rodgers and Hart as well as championing songwriters whose voices have been neglected.
Our goal is not to recreate the past, but to draw on historical traditions to create contemporary performances that are vibrant and provocative, placing this repertoire in new contexts for today’s audiences.

Led by artistic directors Eric Davis and Corey Jamason, we are a group of singers and instrumentalists passionate about presenting music from early Broadway, vaudeville, and musical film. We aim to emulate the original interpretive styles heard in early recordings by the artists who first introduced these songs.
-
We emulate the performance styles heard in historical recordings to rediscover the charm and vitality of the music that animated the American stage in the early twentieth century and earlier. Combining musicological and editorial scholarship with the finest instrumental and vocal artistry, we believe our approach to performing this repertoire is unique in today’s musical scene. We are committed to creating educational programs that build awareness and appreciation of early American musical traditions.

Studio for the Early American Musical is dedicated to reviving Broadway musical styles from shows that opened before 1960, before the advent of amplification in the theatre. Applying principles of the early-music movement to popular music from the New York stage, Studio for the Early American Musical uses historically informed performance practices and original orchestrations to recapture the original sound and energy of Golden Age Broadway musicals. Our mission is to re-establish this repertoire as a staple of American musical culture through virtuosic, innovative performances.
